A Robust 12-Inch Walk-Behind Scarifier for Surface Prep

MTQT Feb,01 2026 2059

I recently had the chance to put this 12-inch (300mm) gasoline scarifier to work on a few surface preparation projects, ranging from roughening up sleek concrete to stripping thermoplastic markings off asphalt. If you're looking for a machine that bridges the gap between small edgers and heavy ride-on milling machines, this 13-horsepower unit deserves a look.

Power and Performance First off, the power plant. This unit runs on a 13 HP commercial-grade gasoline engine. In my testing, that extra horsepower really matters. We were cutting at a depth of about 3mm to 5mm (approx. 1/8 to 3/16 inch), and the engine didn't bog down, even when we hit harder aggregate. The drum is set up with 150 individual cutters, which allowed us to achieve a very aggressive profile quickly. The manufacturer claims a theoretical productivity of 170 m²/h (about 1,830 sq. ft/hr), and honestly, on a straight run with minimal maneuvering, we were hitting numbers very close to that. It’s efficient.

Handling and Build The machine weighs in at 220kg (485 lbs). In the world of scarifiers, weight is your friend—it keeps the drum planted and prevents the machine from "skipping" over high spots. However, despite the heft, it wasn't a nightmare to move. The wheel design is solid, and the overall footprint is compact—about 1125mm long by 500mm wide (44 x 20 inches). We could fit it through standard doorways and load it onto the trailer without needing a forklift every time.

Operation and Maintenance Operating it is straightforward. The depth control is precise, allowing us to dial in the cut without gouging the slab. It’s versatile enough for both concrete and asphalt work. From a maintenance standpoint, I appreciate the simplicity. We all know that on a job site, complexity kills. This machine has a rugged, simple structure that looks easy to service. Changing out the drum or swapping worn cutters doesn't require tearing the whole machine apart, which keeps downtime to a minimum.

The Bottom Line After running this unit for a week, I can say it's a solid, durable workhorse. It combines the heavy-duty weight needed for a consistent cut with the portability required for diverse job sites.
