Reversible vs. Forward Direction: Navigating Utility Trenches

MTQT Mar,09 2026 5

If you are backfilling a sewer lateral or a water main trench, you quickly realize that a forward-only plate compactor is a liability in tight spaces. Once you reach the end of a 450mm (approx. 18-inch) wide trench, you have to physically drag a 100kg machine backward—a recipe for back injuries. This is why the reversible vibratory plate compactor (双向平板夯) was engineered. Utilizing a dual-shaft exciter system, these machines use hydraulic controls to shift the phase of the eccentric weights. By pulling a lever, you change the direction of the centrifugal force, allowing the machine to walk backward or even "hover" over a stubborn soft spot. For subbase preparation in narrow areas, the ability to maneuver without turning around is not just a convenience; it is a fundamental requirement for achieving Proctor Density in structural backfill.
