At the bauma CHINA 2024 Shanghai Construction Machinery Exhibition which was launched yesterday, Cummins showcased its off-road hybrid power chain in its entirety for the first time. As early as the beginning of this year, Cummins' high-horsepower hybrid power technology had been successfully applied to the NTH260 hybrid mining truck project jointly promoted by Beifang Co., Ltd. and Cummins. This is also Cummins' first global hybrid power solution, aiming to help mining users optimize operating costs and accelerate decarbonization processes.

Cummins' first

Hybrid power mining truck solution

As a leading provider of power solutions, Cummins adopts an optimized hybrid power system. Previously, mining trucks powered by 60-liter engines (2,500 horsepower) can now be powered by two-stage 50-liter engines (2,000 horsepower), achieving a dual improvement in power and efficiency.

Since March 2024, the NTH260 hybrid mining truck has undergone long-term field tests at a large open-pit mine in China. As of now, this hybrid mining truck has been operating without any system failures for over 1,500 hours and has undergone full-load testing for more than 1,200 hours.

High efficiency and fuel saving

Significant cost-effectiveness

The Cummins QSK50 hybrid engine has a rated power of 1490kW and is equipped with an advanced MCRS injection system, achieving higher fuel efficiency. In response to the actual working environment of mining trucks, the Cummins engineering team has specially developed an optimized loading curve to further enhance the fuel economy of the engine under different working conditions. In addition, the engine is equipped with multiple built-in operation modes, which can automatically optimize the energy distribution between the engine and the energy storage system based on conditions such as starting, parking, acceleration, and braking. In actual tests, it can achieve a fuel-saving effect of approximately 20%. Compared with diesel engines, this hybrid system can save over 800,000 yuan in annual fuel costs per vehicle, while also enhancing the overall power performance and operational efficiency of the vehicle.

Flexible operation

Forward-looking design for the future

The Cummins QSK50 hybrid engine fully takes into account the actual needs of users and can be easily installed without making any changes to the existing infrastructure, enhancing operational flexibility. The engine adopts a modular component design, which can provide customized services for new installations in the front market and renovations in the rear market. Meanwhile, this design reserves sufficient space for future product upgrades, ensuring that users' investments can continuously benefit from the dividends brought by technological progress.

After several months of rigorous testing, Cummins' hybrid mining truck solution has demonstrated outstanding fuel-saving, emission reduction and cost reduction effects, proving its strength as an ideal choice for decarbonizing mining equipment. In the future, Cummins will continue to join hands with industry partners to jointly explore more innovative solutions, continuously assist users in optimizing operational costs and efficiency, and promote the green and sustainable development of the mining industry.
