Operating Procedures for Road Rollers

When in operation, the roller should be started first and then vibrated. The internal combustion engine should be set to medium speed first and then adjusted to high speed.

2. When changing speed or direction, the machine should be stopped first. When changing speed, the speed of the internal combustion engine should be reduced.

3. It is strictly prohibited for the roller to vibrate on a solid ground.

When compacting soft subgrades, it is necessary to compact 1 to 2 times without vibration first, and then compact with vibration.

5. When rolling, the vibration frequency should be kept consistent. For the vibratory roller that can be adjusted, the vibration frequency should be set before operation. It is not allowed to adjust the vibration frequency without starting the vibration.

6. The adjustment of the reversing clutch, the starting clutch and the brake should be carried out after the main clutch is disengaged.

7. When going up or down slopes, do not use the fast gear. When making sharp turns, including when articulated vibratory rollers are making small turns and circling for compaction, it is strictly prohibited to use the fast gear.

8. When the roller is traveling at high speed, it must not engage and vibrate.

When shutting down, first stop the vibration, then place the reversing mechanism in the middle position, put the transmission in neutral, and finally pull up the handbrake lever. Let the internal combustion engine idle for several minutes and then turn it off.

10. Other operation requirements shall comply with the regulations for static pressure rollers.

Roller compaction techniques

Whether going uphill or downhill, the bottom layer of the asphalt mixture must be clean and dry, and an asphalt bonding layer must be sprayed to prevent the mixture from sliding during compaction.

Whether it is uphill or downhill compaction, the drive wheels of the roller should always be at the rear. This approach has the following advantages: When going uphill, the rear drive wheels can bear the driving force provided by the slope and the machine itself, while the front wheels initially compact the road surface to withstand the greater shear force generated by the drive wheels. When going downhill, the impact force generated by the self-weight of the roller is offset by the braking of the drive wheels. Only the mixture compacted by the front wheels has the ability to support the shear force produced by the rear drive wheels.

When rolling uphill, the roller should start, stop and accelerate smoothly to avoid going too fast or too slow.

Before uphill compaction, the mixture should be cooled to the specified lower limit temperature, and then static pre-compaction should be carried out. Only when the temperature of the mixture drops to the lower limit (120℃) should vibration compaction be adopted.

⑤ When rolling down a slope, sudden speed changes and braking should be avoided.

When conducting downhill compaction on a very steep slope, a light roller should be used for pre-compaction first, and then a heavy roller or vibratory roller should be used for compaction.
