Cummins, a global pioneer in multi-power technologies, has signed a Memorandum of understanding with Komatsu, a global provider of construction and mining equipment and services, to jointly develop zero-emission mining transportation equipment. Cummins and Komatsu have a long history of cooperation in the field of diesel power for mining machinery and equipment. In the future, the two sides will focus on zero-emission power technologies, including hydrogen fuel cell solutions applied to large mining rigid dump trucks.

Amy Davis, vice president of Cummins and president of the New Energy Power Business, said: "Komatsu has profound expertise in mine and equipment design and integration, and Cummins has advanced fuel cell power technology. The cooperation between the two sides will accelerate the decarbonization process of mine equipment." The mining industry has great potential in applying renewable energy solutions.

In August 2021, Komatsu released a multi-power source concept truck, which can use different power sources, including hybrid, overhead line application, pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell. This cooperation between the two sides is an important part of the multi-power source concept truck.

As a leading diversified power provider in the mining sector, Cummins has unique insights into product applications, ensuring the reliability of its products under extreme working conditions. Cummins has a wide range of product portfolios, from electric power, fuel cell systems to electrolyzers (used for hydrogen production), all of which are key components for decarbonization. Cummins has a long history of cooperation with Komatsu in the global mining market and possesses a strong technical capability to develop innovative solutions.

Masayuki Moriyama, president of Komatsu's Mining Division, said: "Cummins has been a long-term partner of Komatsu and has been committed to supporting key technology investments in the energy transition of the mining industry. These technologies are crucial for helping mining customers reduce carbon emissions and accelerate carbon neutrality." We will join hands with Cummins to provide customers with sustainable development solutions.

Komatsu is committed to minimizing its environmental impact. It plans to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions generated in the application of its products and the production of its equipment by 50% by 2030 (compared with 2010) and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

For decades, Komatsu has been committed to developing innovative products in multiple fields to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for its customers, including diesel-electric drive dump trucks, hybrid excavators, electric excavators, regenerative energy storage capabilities and fuel-saving plans.

In 2021, Komatsu announced the establishment of a greenhouse gas alliance with its customers, actively collaborating on product planning, development, testing and deployment of next-generation zero-emission mining equipment and infrastructure. With the goal of promoting Komatsu's multi-power source concept truck project, it is planned to achieve commercialization by 2030.

The cooperation with Komatsu is part of Cummins' zero-carbon goal strategy. Cummins is committed to further reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of its products, minimizing their impact on air quality, and plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. To fulfill this commitment, Cummins will continue to drive product innovation and explore diverse energy and power solutions.
