On December 21st, Yuchai officially launched China's first hydrogen-fueled engine for commercial vehicles at Beijing Institute of Technology. The stable operation of the ignition of this engine marks a crucial step forward for Yuchai in mastering the key technologies for large-scale and low-cost utilization of hydrogen energy. This is another milestone achievement of Yuchai in the application of hydrogen energy following the release of hydrogen fuel cells. It is also an important step for China's internal combustion engine industry to promote power transformation in the context of the hydrogen energy era. It also marks that Yuchai has become the enterprise with the most traditional and new energy power technology routes and the richest technical reserves in China's internal combustion engine industry.

Hydrogen-burning engines are an important technical path for China's internal combustion engine industry to implement the "dual carbon" goals. Yuchai, a leading company in technology, has taken the lead in initiating the research and development of hydrogen-burning engines in the domestic commercial vehicle sector in order to break through the key technologies of hydrogen-burning engines and has strengthened its scientific research cooperation with Beijing Institute of Technology.

The YCK05 hydrogen-fueled engine that was successfully ignited this time adopts a number of advanced specialized technologies such as high-pressure multi-point intake port injection technology, high-efficiency low-inertia turbocharging technology, and high-efficiency lean combustion technology. It has also comprehensively optimized and upgraded the overall structure, combustion, and valve train subsystems, overcoming technical challenges such as easy backfire and knocking in hydrogen-fueled engines. It can be widely applied in scenarios such as public transportation, municipal works, environmental sanitation, and logistics distribution.

Professor Sun Baigang from Beijing Institute of Technology, who witnessed the successful ignition of this engine, said that the thermal efficiency of the YCK05 hydrogen-burning engine is comparable to that of hydrogen fuel cells and even better than some fuel cell products on the market. It not only has a high hydrogen energy utilization efficiency but also solves the range anxiety of pure electric systems. Moreover, the time for hydrogen refueling is shorter than that for fuel vehicles. Once the technology is mature and the infrastructure is improved, The promotion of hydrogen-fueled engines is set to experience explosive growth.

It is learned that in order to better meet customer demands, Yuchai has carried out technical research and reserves in light, medium and heavy-duty hydrogen-fueled engines.
