From Tradition to Innovation: 3D Technology Becomes a "Must-have"

"We initially adopted traditional techniques, but later realized that there were better ways to carry out the construction." " Carlos Ruiz Miranda, the chief surveyor of the project, recalled, "Ultimately, the team decided to introduce Trimble's 3D technology, which enabled us to increase production, reduce human errors and lower costs." This upgrade project has become a testing ground for the "technological breakthrough" in Peru's construction industry.

One key feature of the new airport is the new runway, which is 3,841 meters long. The runway is paved with 40-centimeter-thick asphalt and constructed in three layers. To ensure the best quality, the team adopted a step-by-step operation mode with two pavers. This helps to form hot joints, thereby eliminating the risk of water seepage in the future and preventing freeze-thaw problems. To further ensure the quality of the paving surface, the team installed the Trimble PCS900 3D paving control system on the paver, achieving full digital synchronization from design data to on-site construction.

Millimeter-level precision: The hardcore performance of 3D automated mechanical control systems

The flatness of the concrete is simply perfect! Ruiz said proudly. This technology is not only applied to runways but also covers 70,000 square meters of aircraft parking areas and 10 kilometers of internal roads, all of which are paved with aviation-grade concrete.

Another key part of the new airport is the expanded aircraft parking area around the terminal building. The Trimble GCS900 slope control system equipped on the Caterpillar 140K motor grader by the team has enabled the tolerance control of the base construction to reach a strict standard, significantly reducing rework.

The final report shows that the paving accuracy of both asphalt and concrete reached 5 millimeters, which is far below the requirement of 10 millimeters. The efficiency improvement was equally significant. 3D technology enabled the team to complete the asphalt and concrete laying tasks ahead of schedule, while reducing human errors and costs. This is incomparable to traditional methods.

Seamless data flow: Trimble Software platform Breaks down information silos

One of the biggest challenges for super-large projects is the synchronization and sharing of massive design data. For this purpose, the project team has built a cloud data platform based on Trimble Connect, which synchronizes the centimeter-level precision data collected by devices such as laser scanners, drones, and total stations in real time to office and on-site equipment.

The project includes approximately 2,700 active BIM models. With such a scale, it is a challenge to ensure that everyone on site works according to the latest model, even if it is just managing measurement control, layout and slope inspection. We need a better way to share data. Ruiz said, "This platform is like a central nervous system, automatically synchronizing information and checking for design conflicts. Construction workers can always obtain the latest models."

The team directly transmits design data from the office to equipment such as pavers through Trimble WorksManager, and the completion data can also be sent back in real time to ensure that the construction fully complies with the owner's standards. Trimble WorksOS software is used to track the production status at the construction site and can generate reports to inform the owner of the construction progress at any time. Trimble SiteVision augmented reality software helps visualize real-time data, improve decision-making and planning, and enables effective communication among teams, reducing errors and costs. In addition, it also enhances the efficiency and accuracy of project execution, which translates into higher-quality results and shorter construction periods.

Technology reshapes collaboration

The greatest gain is the change in the team collaboration mode. Ruiz concluded. In the past, departments relied on paper drawings and manual communication. Now, through 3D visualization and AR tools (such as Trimble SiteVision), they can view progress and identify problems in real time.

This technological innovation not only enabled Lima Airport to rank among the top hubs in Latin America, but also set a technological benchmark for Peru's infrastructure. As Ruiz said, "The first time we used 3D technology in Peru, we proved its value." In the future, this model will reshape more large-scale projects.
